The Website Launch Checklist We Use Before Every Site Goes Live

Consultant testing pages on a laptop and phone using a website launch checklist

A website launch checklist sounds like something only developers need, until the morning a prospect emails to say your contact form does not work. We have seen it happen to consultants who never knew there was a problem. The form looked fine. It just sent every message to an old address nobody checked.

Launch is where weeks of careful work can be undone by one missed detail. A broken redirect wipes out years of search visibility. A test page called “Sample Page” shows up in Google. The site looks perfect on a laptop and falls apart on the phone a school district buyer is using in the parking lot.

This is the list we work through before any site we build goes live. It is written for consultants, experts and small firms, and you can use it whether we built your site or not.

Key takeaways

  • A website launch checklist protects you from small mistakes that cost leads and search rankings.
  • Test every form by submitting it yourself and confirming the email arrives.
  • If you are replacing an old site, redirects are the most important SEO task on launch day.
  • Check the site on a real phone, not just a resized browser window.
  • The week after launch matters as much as the day itself. Watch, fix and update your profiles.

Why you need a website launch checklist

By the time a site is ready to launch, everyone involved has looked at it hundreds of times. That is exactly the problem. Familiar eyes skip over typos, broken links and missing images because the brain fills in what it expects to see.

A website launch checklist forces a fresh, systematic look. It turns “I think it is ready” into “we checked these specific things and they work.” For a consulting firm, that matters. Your buyers are careful people. A general counsel vetting an expert or a hospital security director comparing consultants will notice sloppiness and quietly move on.

It also saves money and stress. Fixing a problem the day before launch is easy. Fixing it after a prospect finds it, or after Google has indexed the wrong pages, takes much longer.

How to use this website launch checklist

We split the website launch checklist into stages: content, design and mobile, functionality, SEO, speed, security, legal and accessibility, launch day and the first week. Work through them on the staging site first, then repeat the most important checks on the live site after the domain points over.

Assign each section of the website launch checklist to a person. On a small project that may be you and one person from your agency. On a firm site, a partner might own content while the developer owns technical checks. What matters is that every line has a name next to it.

Quick tip: Print this website launch checklist or copy it into a shared document. Ticking boxes on paper feels old fashioned, but it is very hard to skip a line you have to physically mark.

1. Content checks

Content mistakes are the ones visitors notice first, so this part of the website launch checklist comes before anything technical.

  • Proofread every page, including footers, menus and form confirmations
  • Remove all placeholder text and sample pages
  • Check names, titles, credentials and dates are correct
  • Confirm phone numbers and email addresses are current and clickable
  • Make sure your address and service area are consistent everywhere
  • Check that testimonials and case studies are approved by the client
  • Confirm every service you offer has a page or clear mention
  • Check that the copyright year in the footer is right
  • Read the homepage aloud. If anything sounds awkward, fix it

If content is still being written, our website copywriting tips can help you tighten the pages before launch.

2. Design and mobile checks

A big share of first visits happen on phones, often from a link someone forwarded. A website launch checklist that skips real devices is not complete.

Working through a website launch checklist on a real phone catches problems a desktop never shows.
  • Test on at least one iPhone and one Android phone, plus a tablet
  • Check the main browsers: Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox
  • Make sure menus open, close and work with one thumb
  • Check that buttons are large enough to tap easily
  • Look for text that overlaps, images that crop badly and sections that run off the screen
  • Confirm your logo is sharp on high resolution screens
  • Check that the favicon (the small icon in the browser tab) appears
  • Make sure every image has loaded and none are stretched

Our guide to mobile friendly website design covers what good mobile layouts need if you find problems here.

3. Functionality checks

This is the section of the website launch checklist that saves the most leads. Every interactive part of the site should be tested by a person, not assumed to work.

Forms

  • Submit every form yourself with real details
  • Confirm the notification email arrives at the right inbox and is not in spam
  • Check the confirmation message or thank you page makes sense
  • Test required fields and error messages
  • Confirm spam protection is active

Links and buttons

  • Click every menu item and every button
  • Run a broken link check across the whole site
  • Make sure external links open correctly
  • Test downloads such as a CV, speaker sheet or capability statement

Integrations

  • Test booking tools, newsletter signup and payment links if you have them
  • Check embedded videos play on mobile
  • Confirm social links go to the right profiles

4. SEO checks in your website launch checklist

Search mistakes at launch are the hardest to undo, because Google may crawl the site before you notice. Of everything on the website launch checklist, this is the section we double check.

On page basics

  • Every page has a unique title tag and meta description
  • Each page has one clear H1 and logical subheadings
  • Images have descriptive alt text
  • URLs are short and readable
  • Internal links connect related pages

Technical setup

  • The setting that blocks search engines on staging is turned off on the live site
  • An XML sitemap exists and is submitted in Google Search Console
  • The robots.txt file does not block important pages
  • Schema markup is in place for your business or person (see our guide to schema markup for small business)
  • Canonical tags point to the right versions of pages

Redirects from the old site

If you are replacing an existing site, this is the single most important item on any website launch checklist. Every old URL that had traffic or links needs a permanent 301 redirect to its new equivalent. Skip it, and visitors and search engines land on error pages. Google’s documentation on site moves with URL changes explains why this matters.

For a full SEO pass, our on page SEO checklist and technical SEO checklist go deeper than this website launch checklist can.

5. Speed and performance checks

A slow site loses impatient buyers and hurts search visibility. Speed belongs on every website launch checklist. Run each key page through a speed test like PageSpeed Insights before launch.

  • Compress and resize images, and use modern formats where possible
  • Enable caching
  • Remove plugins and scripts you do not use
  • Check that fonts load quickly and do not cause layout jumps
  • Test the homepage and one service page on a mobile connection

You do not need a perfect score. You need pages that load quickly for a real person on a real phone. Our website speed optimization guide explains the fixes that make the biggest difference.

6. Security and backups

New sites are not safe just because they are new. This part of the website launch checklist protects the work you just finished.

  • SSL is active and every page loads over https
  • Admin usernames are not “admin” and passwords are strong
  • Two factor login is turned on for admin accounts
  • Unused user accounts from the build are removed
  • A security plugin or firewall is configured
  • Automatic backups are running, stored off the server, and you have tested a restore
  • Themes, plugins and core software are up to date

Our website security checklist and WordPress backup best practices cover these in detail.

7. Analytics, tracking and ownership

If you cannot measure the site, you cannot improve it, which is why tracking sits on our website launch checklist. Set these up before launch so you capture data from day one.

  • Google Analytics 4 is installed and recording visits (our GA4 guide walks through it)
  • Form submissions are tracked as key events
  • Google Search Console is verified
  • Your Google Business Profile links to the new site, if you have one
  • You have admin access to the domain, hosting, site, analytics and Search Console
  • The domain is registered in your name, with auto renewal on

That last pair matters more than most people realize. We regularly meet consultants who cannot change their own site because a past designer still controls the accounts. A good website launch checklist always ends with you holding the keys.

8. Legal and accessibility checks

  • A privacy policy is published and linked in the footer
  • A cookie notice is in place if your tracking needs one
  • Any terms or disclaimers your profession requires are visible
  • Text has enough contrast against its background
  • The site can be used with a keyboard alone
  • Videos have captions where possible
  • Headings follow a logical order

Accessibility is good practice, opens your site to more buyers and earns its place on any website launch checklist. Our website accessibility checklist is a practical next step.

9. Launch day checklist

Launch day itself should feel boring. If it feels dramatic, something was missed earlier. Here is the short website launch checklist we follow on the day:

Developer reviewing a new website before it goes live
Launch day goes smoothly when the hard checks were finished the week before.
  1. Take a full backup of the old site and the new one
  2. Point the domain or switch hosting
  3. Confirm SSL works on the live domain
  4. Turn off the “discourage search engines” setting
  5. Test redirects from a handful of important old URLs
  6. Submit every form again on the live site
  7. Submit the sitemap in Search Console
  8. Click through the main pages on your phone

We like working through the launch day website launch checklist on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning. Everyone is around, and there is time to fix anything before the weekend.

10. The first week after launch

A website launch checklist does not end when the site goes live. The next seven days tell you whether everything is working in the real world.

  • Check Search Console for crawl errors and fix them quickly
  • Watch analytics to confirm data is coming in
  • Look for any 404 errors and add missing redirects
  • Update your LinkedIn profile, email signature, directory listings and speaker bios with the new URL
  • Tell past clients and referral partners, with a short note about what is new
  • Ask two or three people outside your firm to use the site and tell you what confused them
  • Go back through the website launch checklist and tick off anything you could only confirm on the live site

For a consultant, the LinkedIn update is easy to forget and well worth doing. Our LinkedIn profile tips show how to make your profile and site tell one story.

The website launch checklist at a glance

If you only have a few minutes, here is the short version of the website launch checklist in one table:

Area Must check Who usually owns it
Content Proofreading, contact details, no placeholder text You
Design and mobile Real phones, main browsers, menus Designer
Forms Submit every form, confirm emails arrive Developer and you
SEO Titles, sitemap, redirects, indexing setting Developer or SEO lead
Speed Image sizes, caching, speed test Developer
Security SSL, logins, backups Developer
Analytics and ownership GA4, Search Console, your access Developer and you
After launch Errors, 404s, profile updates Both

A good launch is quiet. Nobody should notice anything except that the new site works.

A website launch checklist for consultants and experts

Most launch lists are written for online stores. Consultants have different risks. Your buyer is not adding something to a cart. They are deciding whether to trust you with a sensitive problem, so the details that build trust deserve their own pass on the website launch checklist.

  • Credentials are current. Certifications, board memberships and licenses should match what is on your LinkedIn profile and CV.
  • Confidential clients stay confidential. Read every case study once more for names, locations or dates that could identify someone.
  • Downloads are the latest versions. An old speaker sheet or capability statement with a retired phone number is a common slip.
  • Booking paths work end to end. If an event planner or attorney books a call, confirm the invite reaches both calendars.
  • Your photo and bio match everywhere. Buyers often check your site, LinkedIn and a conference page side by side.

An expert witness, for example, should check that the CV on the site is the same one attorneys receive by email. A keynote speaker should confirm that every video on the topics page still plays. Our guides to expert witness websites and speaker website design cover the pages those sites need.

Who should run the website launch checklist?

Ideally, two people: someone who built the site and someone who did not. The builder knows where the technical risks are. The outsider sees the site the way a buyer will, without knowing what is supposed to be there.

If you are a solo consultant, ask a trusted colleague or a past client to spend fifteen minutes with the site on their phone and tell you what confused them. That small favor often catches the one thing the whole website launch checklist missed, like a button label that only makes sense to you.

Common launch mistakes we fix

Even with a website launch checklist, some mistakes come up again and again when sites built elsewhere come to us:

  • Search engines still blocked. The site launched with the staging setting still on, so it never appears in Google.
  • No redirects. Years of links and rankings pointing at pages that no longer exist.
  • Forms going nowhere. Messages sent to a developer’s test inbox.
  • Accounts in someone else’s name. The client cannot renew the domain or access hosting.
  • No backups. Discovered only when something breaks.

Each of these is a five minute check before launch and a long, stressful fix afterward. If you are planning a redesign rather than a first site, our website redesign checklist covers the planning stage that comes before all of this.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to work through a website launch checklist?

For a typical consultant or small firm site, plan on a day or two of focused checking before launch, plus a little time each day in the first week afterward. Larger sites with many pages or integrations take longer.

What is the most important item on a website launch checklist?

If you are replacing an old site, setting up redirects. If it is a brand new site, testing your forms and making sure search engines are allowed to index it. Those three items cause the most damage when missed.

Should I launch on a Friday?

We avoid it. Launch early in the week so that if anything goes wrong, you and your developer are both available to fix it quickly.

Can I use this website launch checklist for a redesign?

Yes. Everything here applies, and redirects become even more important because you have existing pages that search engines and visitors already know.

Do you offer launch support for sites you did not build?

Often, yes. We can review a site before launch, run the checks above and fix what we find. Get in touch and tell us a little about the site and timing.

Want a calm launch day?
