On Page SEO Checklist: How We Optimize Every Page Before It Goes Live

Consultant working through an on page SEO checklist on a laptop

An on page SEO checklist is the most practical SEO tool a consultant can own, because it covers the part of search you fully control: the pages on your own site. You cannot force another website to link to you. You cannot change how Google’s algorithm works. But you can make sure every service page, bio and article is clear, well structured and easy for both people and search engines to understand.

We see the same pattern with new clients all the time. A security consultant or HR advisor has good expertise and a decent looking site, but the pages were never set up for search. Title tags say “Home” or “Services.” Headings are styled text instead of real headings. Images are named IMG_4032. Nobody did anything wrong. Nobody ran a checklist.

This is the on page SEO checklist we use before any page goes live on a client site. It is written for consultants, experts, speakers and small professional firms, and it works whether your site runs on WordPress, Webflow, Squarespace or anything else.

Key takeaways

  • An on page SEO checklist covers what you control: titles, descriptions, headings, URLs, content, links, images and structured data.
  • Each important page should target one main topic and answer it better than the pages already ranking.
  • Internal links tell Google which pages matter most and help visitors find the next step.
  • Experience, expertise, authority and trust (E E A T) signals are where consultants have a natural advantage.
  • Run the checklist on every new page and review your top pages once or twice a year.

What an on page SEO checklist covers (and what it does not)

On page SEO is everything you do on a specific page to help it rank for a specific search: the words, the structure, the code and the links on that page. Off page SEO is about what happens elsewhere, mainly links and mentions from other sites. Technical SEO covers the site as a whole, such as crawling, indexing, speed and security.

This on page SEO checklist focuses on the page itself. For the site wide technical side, see our technical SEO checklist. For earning links from other sites, see our guide to link building for small business. For the bigger picture, our SEO for consultants guide ties it all together.

Why start with on page work? Because it is the foundation. Links and technical fixes help a good page rank higher. They cannot rescue a page that does not clearly answer what the searcher wants.

1. Pick one main topic and keyword per page

Every important page should have one clear job. Your school safety assessment page should target searches about school safety assessments. Your keynote topics page should target searches from event planners looking for that kind of speaker. When one page tries to rank for five different things, it usually ranks for none of them.

Start your on page SEO checklist by writing down the main keyword phrase for the page and two or three close variations. Check what already ranks for that phrase. If the top results are guides and your page is a sales page, you may need a different angle or a different page. Our keyword research for small business guide shows how to find the right phrases.

Also check that no other page on your site targets the same phrase. Two pages competing for the same keyword split your strength.

2. On page SEO checklist step: a title tag that earns the click

The title tag is the blue headline people see in search results. It is still one of the strongest on page signals, and it decides whether someone clicks you or the result below.

Title tag rules from our on page SEO checklist:

  • Put the main keyword near the start.
  • Keep it to roughly 50 to 60 characters so it does not get cut off.
  • Make it specific and appealing, not just a list of keywords.
  • Add your brand name at the end if there is room.
  • Write a unique title for every page.

For example, “Expert Witness in Workplace Security | Jane Doe Consulting” says more than “Services | Jane Doe.” Google may sometimes rewrite titles, but a clear, accurate title gives it less reason to.

3. Write a meta description that sells the visit

This on page SEO checklist step is about clicks more than rankings. The meta description is the short summary under your title in search results. It does not directly affect rankings, but it affects clicks, which is the whole point.

Keep it around 140 to 160 characters. Include the main keyword naturally, because Google often bolds matching words. Describe what the visitor will get and give them a reason to click: a checklist, a clear answer, a free consultation. Every page on your on page SEO checklist needs its own description. Duplicates look lazy to users and to search engines.

4. Structure headings properly

Headings are the outline of your page. Search engines use them to understand structure, and visitors use them to scan. Many sites use big bold text that looks like a heading but is not coded as one, which hides that structure from Google.

Heading rules

  • Use one H1 per page, usually the page title, containing the main keyword.
  • Use H2s for main sections and H3s for subsections under them.
  • Include the keyword or close variations in a few H2s where it reads naturally.
  • Write headings that tell the reader what the section is about.
  • Never skip levels just for styling. Change the style in CSS instead.

A quick test for this part of the on page SEO checklist: read only the headings. If they make sense as an outline of the page, you are in good shape.

5. Keep URLs short and readable

URLs are a small, easy win on any on page SEO checklist. A good URL tells people and search engines what the page is about before they click. Compare /services/school-safety-assessment/ with /page?id=284. The first one is clearly better.

URL rules in our on page SEO checklist:

  • Use the main keyword or a short version of it.
  • Keep it short. Remove filler words like “and,” “the” or “of” when you can.
  • Use lowercase letters.
  • Avoid dates in URLs for content you plan to update.
  • Do not change URLs on established pages without setting up a redirect.

Google’s own URL structure guidance recommends simple, descriptive URLs for the same reason.

6. Make the content deep enough to be the best answer

Content depth does not mean word count. It means fully answering the question behind the search. A page about “workplace violence prevention training” should explain what the training covers, who it is for, how it is delivered, what organizations get out of it and how to book it. If the competing pages answer questions yours does not, they will usually outrank you.

When we work through the content part of an on page SEO checklist, we ask:

  • Does the page answer the main question in the first few paragraphs?
  • Does it cover the follow up questions a buyer would have?
  • Does it include specific details only an experienced practitioner would know?
  • Is it easy to scan, with short paragraphs, lists and clear headings?
  • Is there a clear next step at the end?

Use the keyword naturally in the first paragraph and a few more times through the page, but write for people first. Our website copywriting tips help with the writing side.

Search engines reward the page that best answers the question. Write that page, then tidy up the signals around it.

7. Add internal links with purpose

Internal links connect your pages. They help visitors move to related content and help search engines understand which pages are most important. A service page with no internal links pointing to it looks unimportant, no matter how good it is.

Internal linking steps for your on page SEO checklist:

  • Link from your homepage and main navigation to your key service pages.
  • Link from blog articles to the relevant service page using descriptive anchor text.
  • Link related articles to each other.
  • Avoid vague anchors like “click here.” Use words that describe the target page.
  • Check for broken internal links after every redesign.

For a consultant site, a simple pattern works well: every article links to at least one service page, and every service page links to two or three supporting articles.

8. Optimize images for search and speed

Images make pages more engaging, but they can also slow them down and miss easy SEO wins. Image work is a quick section of any on page SEO checklist.

  • Name files descriptively before upload, such as campus-safety-training.jpg.
  • Write alt text that describes the image in plain words, including the keyword only where it fits naturally.
  • Compress images and use modern formats like WebP.
  • Set width and height so the page does not jump around while loading.
  • Lazy load images below the first screen.

Alt text also helps people using screen readers, so it does double duty. Our website accessibility checklist covers that side in more detail.

9. Add schema markup where it fits

Schema is the most technical item on this on page SEO checklist, but it is easier than it sounds. Schema markup is structured data that tells search engines exactly what your content is: a person, an organization, a service, an article, an event, a FAQ. It can help your pages qualify for richer search results and helps AI search tools understand who you are.

For consultants, the most useful types are usually Person, Organization or ProfessionalService, Article, FAQPage and Event for speaking dates. You can find the full vocabulary on Schema.org. On WordPress, plugins like Rank Math add most of this without code. Our guide to schema markup for small business walks through each type.

10. Show E E A T signals on every page

Google’s quality guidelines talk about experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness, often shortened to E E A T. These are not a single ranking factor, but they describe what Google wants to reward: content from people who actually know the subject.

This is where consultants shine. You have real experience, credentials and stories. Add them to your pages:

  • Author bylines on articles, linking to a bio page with credentials.
  • Specific examples from your work (with client permission or anonymized).
  • Certifications, licenses, publications and speaking history.
  • Clear contact details and a physical business address if you have one.
  • Reviews or testimonials with real names.

Google explains what it looks for in its guide to creating helpful, reliable content. Make E E A T a standing line on your on page SEO checklist. A strong about page supports it across the whole site.

11. Check the page on mobile and for speed

Google ranks pages using the mobile version, so the last stretch of the on page SEO checklist is to open the page on a phone. Is the text readable? Do buttons work? Does the page load quickly? Is anything hidden on mobile that appears on desktop?

Run the page through PageSpeed Insights and fix obvious problems such as oversized images or heavy scripts. Our mobile friendly website design guide covers what to look for.

12. Review and refresh your best pages

SEO is not a one time task. Search results change, competitors publish new content, and your own services evolve. Once or twice a year, rerun the on page SEO checklist on your most important pages.

Use Google Search Console to see which searches bring people to each page. If a page shows up for queries you did not target, consider adding a section that answers them. If clicks are low despite good positions, rewrite the title and description. Small updates on proven pages often beat writing brand new ones.

Service pages vs articles: using the on page SEO checklist on both

The same on page SEO checklist works for service pages and blog articles, but the emphasis shifts. A service page targets a buyer who is close to a decision. It needs a sharp title, a clear explanation of what you deliver, proof, and an obvious way to get in touch. Depth here means answering buying questions: who it is for, how it works, what happens after they call.

An article targets someone earlier in their research. It can go wider and teach more. Its main SEO job is to rank for an informational search and then pass visitors, and link strength, to the right service page. So for articles, internal links and E E A T signals carry extra weight in the on page SEO checklist.

Bio and about pages matter too. For experts, speakers and expert witnesses, the bio is often the page that gets checked most closely, so give it a proper title, real headings and schema for a Person.

Mistakes an on page SEO checklist catches

When we audit consultant sites, the same issues come up again and again. Each one is quick to fix once you see it.

  • Duplicate titles. Every service page titled with only the company name, so search results show the same headline five times.
  • Missing H1. A page builder template where the main heading is just styled text.
  • Orphan pages. A great service page that nothing else on the site links to.
  • Thin service pages. Three sentences and a contact button, which gives Google little to rank.
  • No author information. Articles with no byline, which wastes your biggest trust asset.
  • Keyword stuffing. The opposite problem: a phrase repeated so often the page reads badly.

If you are planning a bigger review, our SEO audit checklist covers the site wide version, and the on page SEO checklist here handles the page level work.

Frequently asked questions

What should an on page SEO checklist include?

At minimum: a target keyword, title tag, meta description, heading structure, URL, content depth, internal links, image optimization, schema markup, E E A T signals and a mobile and speed check.

How often should I run an on page SEO checklist?

Run it on every new page before it goes live, and review your most important pages once or twice a year, or when rankings drop.

Is on page SEO enough to rank?

For low competition local or niche searches, strong on page work can be enough. In competitive areas, you also need technical health and quality links from other sites.

How many times should the keyword appear on a page?

There is no magic number. Use it in the title, first paragraph, a few headings and naturally through the text. If it starts to sound forced, you are overdoing it.

Can Design Fly 24 handle on page SEO for me?

Yes. Our SEO services include a full page by page review, rewriting titles and descriptions, fixing structure and adding schema, for WordPress and other platforms.
