Wix website design is where a lot of consultants start, and for good reason. You can pick a template on Monday, drag in your logo and a headshot, and have something live by Friday. The trouble starts a few months later, when a school district buyer or a hiring partner at a law firm lands on that site and quietly decides you look smaller than you are.
We see this every month in Wix website design reviews. The expertise is real, the client list is strong, but the site looks like a template with the placeholder text swapped out. Nothing is broken. It just does not do the job of selling you while you sleep.
We design and fix sites on Wix, WordPress, Webflow, Squarespace and Shopify, so we have no reason to talk you out of Wix. This guide covers how we approach a Wix project for a consultant or small firm, what we change first, and where the platform has real limits you should know about before you start.
- Good Wix website design starts with a plan for your pages and your buyer, not with a template.
- Pick between the classic Wix Editor and Wix Studio before you build, because switching later means rebuilding.
- The mobile layout needs its own review on Wix. Never assume it matches the desktop.
- Speed, clear headings and one page per service matter more than animations.
- Wix is a strong fit for most small consultant sites, but you rent the platform, so plan for that.
What good Wix website design looks like in 2026
Wix today is not the Wix of ten years ago. You get proper control over page titles, URLs, redirects and structured data. There is a built in blog, bookings, forms, a members area, online store tools and multilingual support. Wix Studio adds responsive layouts and breakpoints that designers actually enjoy working with.
So the platform is rarely the problem in Wix website design. When a Wix site underperforms, it is almost always the design decisions. Too many fonts. A homepage that talks about the consultant instead of the client. A contact page buried three clicks deep. Sections that look lovely on a laptop and fall apart on a phone.
Good Wix website design for a consultant comes down to three things. A visitor should know within a few seconds what you do and who you do it for. They should see proof that you are credible. And they should have an obvious, easy next step. Everything else is decoration.
1. Plan the site before you open the editor
The biggest mistake we see in DIY Wix website design is starting with a template and working backwards. The template decides the page count, the layout and even the tone. You end up fitting your business into somebody else’s idea of a yoga studio or a restaurant.
Start with a simple page plan on paper instead. For most consultants that looks something like this:
- Home: who you help, the problem you solve, proof, and one clear call to action.
- A page for each core service, written for the buyer of that service.
- About: your background, credentials and why clients trust you.
- Case studies or results, described honestly.
- Insights or blog, if you will actually publish.
- Contact: a short form, phone, email and what happens next.
Once you know the pages and the main message on each one, the design has something to serve. For Wix website design or any other platform, our web design process walks through how we plan this with clients.
2. Choose between Wix Editor and Wix Studio
Wix now offers two main ways to build. The classic Wix Editor is a free placement, drag and drop builder. It is easy to learn, and you design the desktop and mobile views somewhat separately. Wix Studio is aimed at designers and agencies. It uses responsive layouts with breakpoints, so the design adapts to screen sizes in a more controlled way.
For a one person consultancy that wants to make its own text edits, the classic editor is often fine. For a small firm that wants a polished, responsive build and may hand it to a designer for ongoing work, Wix Studio usually gives better results.
Decide this early. Moving a finished site from one to the other is not a click of a button, it is a rebuild. The same goes for templates in the classic editor: once a site is live, you cannot simply swap to a different template and keep your content in place. A little thinking at the start of your Wix website design saves a lot of rework.

3. Pick a Wix website design template for structure, not looks
When you do choose a template, judge it by its bones. Does it have a clean header with room for a call to action button? Are the sections simple enough to rearrange? Is the typography readable at normal sizes? Does it rely on huge video backgrounds to look good?
The prettiest template in the gallery is often the worst choice, because its beauty depends on stock photos and effects you will remove anyway. A plain, well structured template gives you a better base for Wix website design that fits your brand.
Then strip it back. Delete the sections you do not need. Replace demo fonts and colors with your own. If you do not have a defined brand yet, settle on two or three colors and one font pairing before you start, so you are not guessing on every page.
4. Write the homepage for your buyer
Your homepage headline is the most valuable line on your site. On most DIY Wix sites we review, it says something like “Welcome to Smith Consulting” or “Excellence in Every Engagement.” Neither tells a busy buyer anything.
A better headline names the client and the outcome. “Security assessments for school districts that need a clear plan, fast.” “Independent HR investigations for employers who need answers they can defend.” The design then supports that line with a short explanation, a few trust signals and a button.
What we put above the fold
- A specific headline about who you help and how.
- One sentence of support that adds detail.
- A primary button such as “Book a call” or “Request a proposal.”
- A credibility cue: a recognizable client logo strip, a credential or a short testimonial.
This part of Wix website design is mostly writing. If words are the hard part for you, our guide on homepage design best practices goes further.
5. Keep the design system simple
Wix lets you change almost everything on every element. That freedom is the reason so many Wix sites look messy. Each page gets a slightly different button, a new shade of blue, a fresh font for a heading that “needed to stand out.”
Set your theme once and stick to it, because consistency is the backbone of good Wix website design. In the Wix editor you can define site colors and text styles globally. Use two fonts at most. Pick one primary button style and one secondary style. Use the same spacing between sections on every page. Consistency is what makes a small firm look established.
A site looks expensive when every page follows the same rules. It looks cheap when every page invents its own.
This is a big part of what clients pay a designer for in a Wix website design project. Not flashy effects, but the discipline of making forty small decisions the same way every time.
6. Design the mobile side of your Wix website design on purpose
In the classic Wix Editor, the mobile view is generated from your desktop layout, and then you can adjust it separately. That is handy, but it also means the mobile version drifts. Elements get hidden and forgotten. Text ends up tiny. Two buttons overlap on smaller phones.
A lot of your visitors will see the phone version first, often right after a LinkedIn post or a referral text. Google also looks at the mobile version of your site first when it evaluates your pages. So mobile is not a cleanup task at the end of Wix website design. It is half the design.
- Check every page on a real phone, not just the preview pane.
- Make the phone number and email tappable.
- Keep body text at a comfortable reading size.
- Put the main call to action near the top on mobile.
- Remove heavy effects that only make sense on a big screen.
Wix Studio handles this better with breakpoints, but you still need to look. Our mobile friendly website design guide has a fuller checklist.

7. Watch speed and heavy effects
Wix handles hosting, image compression and modern image formats for you, which helps. What it cannot fix is a design choice. Full screen video backgrounds, parallax strips, scrolling animations on every block and five sliders on one page all add weight.
In Wix website design, use effects where they help someone understand something, and skip them everywhere else. Resize photos before uploading. Limit third party embeds like chat widgets and social feeds. Then run your key pages through PageSpeed Insights to see how they hold up on real devices.
You do not need a perfect score. You need pages that feel quick. Our post on Core Web Vitals explains what the numbers mean.

8. Build in SEO from the first draft
Search is easier to get right during Wix website design than after launch. Wix gives you the controls. The design needs to give those controls something to work with.
That means one H1 per page that states the topic, then H2 and H3 headings that organize the content. It means a separate page for each core service so Google has a clear page to match to a clear search. It means descriptive URLs, written page titles and meta descriptions, and alt text on meaningful images.
A common Wix website design habit is to set big decorative text as Heading 1 just because it looks right. That muddles the page structure. Pick the heading level for meaning, then style it to look the way you want. We cover the setup in detail in our Wix SEO guide, and Google’s own SEO Starter Guide is worth a read too.
9. Make it accessible and easy to contact
Accessibility is not a nice extra in Wix website design. It affects real visitors, including older decision makers who zoom in on text, and people using screen readers. Wix includes an accessibility wizard that flags common problems like missing alt text and poor contrast. Run it, but do not stop there.
- Check color contrast on buttons and light gray text.
- Use real headings instead of styled paragraphs.
- Label every form field clearly.
- Make sure links say where they go, not just “click here.”
The W3C Web Accessibility Initiative has clear guidance if you want to go further.
Then make contact easy. A short form with only the fields you need, a phone number in the header, and a line telling people what happens after they hit submit. That last line is something most Wix website design projects forget, and it quietly lifts the number of people who reach out.
10. Plan for ownership and growth
Here is the honest trade off. Wix is a hosted platform. You do not get a copy of your site files to move elsewhere. If you leave Wix one day, you rebuild the design on the new platform and move your content over. That is fine for most small sites, but you should go into any Wix website design project knowing it.
Wix also covers a lot through its own apps and through Velo, its development platform for custom code. For most consultants that is plenty. If you expect to need complex integrations, a large content library or full control over hosting, compare your options first. Our posts on Wix vs Squarespace and WordPress vs Squarespace lay out the differences fairly.
Wix website design checklist for consultants
Use this table as a quick review of your current site, or as a brief for a new Wix website design project.
| Area | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Message | Homepage headline names who you help | Visitors decide in seconds whether to stay |
| Structure | One page per core service | Clear pages for buyers and for search |
| Brand | Global colors and text styles set | Consistency signals an established firm |

DIY or hire help for your Wix website design?
Plenty of consultants handle their own Wix website design and build a decent site themselves, and we would never say you have to hire someone. If your work is mostly referral based and the site just needs to confirm you are real, a clean template and well written pages might be all you need.
Bring in help with your Wix website design when the site has a bigger job. Maybe you are moving into a new market and need to look the part. Maybe you have tried the DIY version and it is not bringing in inquiries. Or maybe your time is simply worth more spent with clients than fighting with spacing on a mobile layout.
A professional Wix website design project should give you a clear page plan, copy that speaks to your buyer, a consistent visual system, a tested mobile version, solid SEO foundations and a site you can still edit yourself. If you want to see how that looks on real projects, browse our work.
As for what a Wix website design project costs, it depends on scope: the number of pages, how much writing is involved, and whether you need bookings, a store or other features. A short call is the quickest way to get a straight answer.
Frequently asked questions
Is Wix website design good enough for a professional consulting firm?
Yes, for most small and midsize consulting firms. Wix gives you the design control, SEO settings and business tools a consultant needs. What decides whether it looks professional is the planning, the writing and the consistency of the design, not the platform name in the footer.
Should I use the Wix Editor or Wix Studio?
If you will edit everything yourself and want the simplest tool, the classic Wix Editor works well. If you want a fully responsive build with more design control, or a designer will maintain it, Wix Studio is usually the better choice. Decide before you build, because switching later means rebuilding.
How long does a Wix website design project take?
A focused consultant site with a handful of pages often takes a few weeks from planning to launch. The biggest variable is content. Projects move fastest when the copy, photos and case studies are ready early.
Can my Wix website design rank on Google?
Yes. Wix has the core SEO controls you need. Rankings come from clear page structure, a page for each service, useful content and a fast mobile experience. Our Wix SEO guide covers the setup step by step.
Can Design Fly 24 redesign my existing Wix site?
Yes. We redesign and fix Wix sites regularly, and we also build on WordPress, Webflow, Squarespace and Shopify. If Wix is the right fit we will keep you on it. If not, we will explain why. See our website design services for how we work.
Let’s make your Wix site work harder
Wix is a capable home for a consultant or small firm. The difference between a site that sits there and a site that brings in calls is the thinking behind it: a clear message, one page per service, a consistent design, a mobile layout someone actually tested, and an easy way to get in touch.
