How Much Does a Consultant Website Cost? The Factors That Change the Number

Quick answer: How much does a consultant website cost? One public estimate of US projects puts freelancer builds at roughly USD 3,650 to 11,600 and agency builds at USD 8,700 to 26,100. Your number depends on the build type (template, custom WordPress, Webflow, Framer or custom code), who writes the content, how many pages you need and the care plan after launch.

Most consultants ask how much does a consultant website cost right after a referral goes quiet. Someone looked you up, saw a dated site (or a LinkedIn profile and nothing else) and never called. Now you want a real website and you want to know what it will set you back.

Here’s the honest answer: the price changes more with how the site is built and who does the writing than with anything else. Below we walk through the five common build types, what each one is good for, the cost drivers that matter for consulting sites specifically, and the hidden costs that turn a cheap quote into an expensive year. We don’t publish our own prices because no two consulting practices need the same site, but you’ll be able to read any quote with a sharp eye.

Key takeaways

  • Public estimates put US consultant sites anywhere from a few thousand dollars to the mid twenty thousands. Scope explains almost all of that gap.
  • Build type sets the baseline: template, custom WordPress, Webflow, Framer or custom code each carry different build and running costs.
  • Content (positioning, copy, case studies, photos) is usually the most underpriced part of a consultant site.
  • The cheapest quote is often the one that leaves the hardest work to you.

How much does a consultant website cost in 2026?

The best public dataset we found is from Project Cost Estimator, which says it draws on more than 600 project quotes. For US business consultant sites it lists:

TierWhat it includesPublished figure
StarterTemplate design and core pagesAbout USD 3,650
StandardCustom design plus must have featuresAbout USD 7,600
PremiumFull custom build, integrations and contentAbout USD 11,600
Agency rangeAcross all tiersUSD 8,700 to 26,100

The same page lists monthly running costs of roughly USD 40 to 200, plus extra for scheduling or email tools. A UK guide from UENI puts a professionally built small business site at about £2,000 to £8,000.

Useful as a sanity check. Not useful as a quote. A “Starter” site for a solo HR advisor and a “Premium” site for a security firm with an expert witness practice are different products, and the table can’t tell you which one you need.

Consulting website cost by build type

This is where most of the price difference lives. We build on all five, so here’s how we’d describe each one to a friend.

Template (Squarespace, Wix or a premium WordPress theme). Lowest build cost. You pick a design and fill it in. Fine for a new practice or a side consultancy. The catch: templates are built for everybody, so your positioning has to do all the work, and most templates bury credentials below the fold.

Custom WordPress. Our most common build for consultants. A design made around your buyer, built with a page builder like Elementor so you can edit text and add case studies later yourself. Mid range build cost, low running cost, and you own everything.

Webflow. Great for design heavy sites and teams that want a clean editor. Build cost sits close to custom WordPress. Running costs are higher because Webflow charges a hosting plan per site. Our Webflow vs WordPress comparison covers the trade offs in detail.

Framer. Fast to build, beautiful motion, strong for one page or small sites. Less suited if you plan to publish a lot of articles or need complex forms.

Custom code (for example Node.js). The most expensive to build and to change. Worth it only when the site does something a CMS can’t, like a client portal or a calculator tied to your data. Most consultants don’t need it, and we’ll tell you so.

What actually drives the price of a consultant site

  • Number of unique page types. A homepage, an about page, a services template, a case study template and a contact page is five designs, even if the site ends up with twenty pages.
  • Content and positioning. Writing a sharp headline for a fractional CTO or an HR expert witness takes real thinking. If the agency writes it, the price goes up. If you write it, the timeline usually doubles.
  • Proof. Case studies, testimonials, media mentions and credentials need a structured home. Collecting and formatting them is work.
  • Booking and lead capture. A Calendly embed is quick. A CRM integration, an intake form with conditional logic or a payments page adds hours.
  • SEO setup. Titles, structure, schema and Search Console at launch should be included. Ongoing SEO for consultants is a separate monthly service.
  • Photography. Consultants sell themselves. A proper headshot session changes the whole site.

The HR Expert Consultants site needed separate paths for executives and attorneys, plus a credentials page. That scope is what sets the price, not the page count.

A real example: what pushed one consultant site up the range

David Morris runs HR Expert Consultants. He has more than three decades of senior HR leadership and also works as an expert witness in HR and employment matters. That second line of work changed the project.

A single audience site would have been a homepage, an about page, services and contact. His needed two audiences, CEOs and boards on one side and attorneys on the other, without either feeling like they’d landed on the wrong site. So we built an executive homepage, a dedicated expert witness page with practice areas laid out for quick scanning, an advisory services page, a credentials page, industries and speaking pages, and a set of reusable widgets so new pages could be added later without a designer.

None of that is exotic. But each extra audience and each extra page type adds design and writing time, and that’s exactly the kind of scope a “five page package” quietly leaves out.

Hidden costs that change the real number

The build is a one time cost. These keep coming:

  • Hosting and domain renewal (see our notes on the best WordPress hosting for small firms).
  • Platform subscriptions if you’re on Webflow, Squarespace, Wix or Framer.
  • Premium plugin or app renewals.
  • Maintenance: updates, backups, security checks and small edits. Skipping this is how sites get hacked.
  • Content updates: new case studies, speaking dates, articles. Someone has to add them.

When you compare quotes, ask each one for the expected cost over the first two years, not just the launch figure.

How much should a website cost for a solo consultant just starting out?

Less than you fear. If you’re in your first year and still finding your niche, a well written template site or a single strong page is plenty. Spend on a great headshot and clear copy. Put the rest into getting conversations.

Upgrade when the website starts doing real work: referrals are checking you out, you’re pitching larger clients, or you’re adding speaking or expert witness work. That’s when a custom site earns its cost back, because a weak site at that stage costs you deals you never hear about.

How to get an accurate quote for your consultant website

You’ll get better quotes, and spot bad ones faster, if you prepare these before your first call.

  1. Write down your two main buyers

Who hires you and who influences the decision. One audience or two changes the site structure.

  2. List the pages you think you need

Use our website checklist for consultants as a starting point, then cut anything that does not help a buyer decide.

  3. Decide who writes the copy

Be honest about your time. If you will not write it in two weeks, ask for copywriting in the quote.

  4. Gather your proof

Credentials, testimonials, logos, media mentions and two or three project stories.

  5. Ask for a design before a big deposit

A homepage concept shows whether the agency understood you. Ours is free, before you pay anything.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a consultant website cost on average?

Public estimates vary widely. Project Cost Estimator lists US freelancer builds at roughly USD 3,650 to 11,600 and agency builds at USD 8,700 to 26,100. Your scope decides where you land.

Is a template good enough for a consulting website?

For a new or part time practice, often yes. Once you are pitching senior buyers or larger contracts, a custom design that leads with your credentials and one clear booking path usually pays for itself.

What is the cheapest professional option?

A well written template site on WordPress or Squarespace with a real headshot. The writing matters more than the design at that stage.

How long does a consultant website take to build?

Our consultant sites usually follow a four week plan from discovery to launch. Content and feedback speed are the biggest variables.

Do I own the website when it is finished?

You should. Insist on owning the domain, hosting account and site files. We hand over full access at launch.

Can I see a design before paying?

With Design Fly 24, yes. We design a free homepage concept first, and you owe nothing if it is not right for you.
